A variety of data protection issues were discussed by renowned speakers, including the Chief Economist at the BDC, Pierre Cléroux, cybersecurity expert Steve Waterhouse, IT columnist Bruno Guglielminetti, author of Vos clics, Leur cash Stéphane Ricoul, attorney specializing in data governance Vanessa Henri, senior strategic advisor at Micrologic Robert Michon, and researcher, founding member and volunteer at the Collectif numérique responsable et soutenable Sylvain Amoros.
Early customers were on hand to attest to the importance of doing business with Canadian companies to better protect their data.
The risks of interference—for both private companies and the government—by leaving data management in the hands of Big Tech are very real.
“A sovereign cloud is a filter. For the government, it means having control over its assets and being asked for permission before having them taken. […] When the government signs a contract with a big foreign company, and gives it control over our data, it delegates part of our sovereignty,” said Vanessa Henri, an attorney specializing in information security and data governance.
The finding is clear: we must pivot to data sovereignty.
“It takes political courage. We need to stop bending the knee to Donald Trump, for example,” stated Stéphane Ricoul.
The president of Micrologic is calling on governments to make legislative changes immediately. There is an urgent need to act.
“We’re leaving $10 billion on the table for our economy. The government can take two actions: First, buy domestic and give Canadian talent and IT companies the opportunity to build Canada’s next big success story. Second, adopt a true digital sovereignty criterion in call for tenders so our sensitive data is protected here in our homeland,” stated Micrologic President Stéphane Garneau.
